Reinterpreted Title Sequence for Pi

This is a reinterpreted title sequence for the film ‘Pi’ by Darren Aronofsky, which was created as part of my Creative Media Honours at RMIT.

The aim of this project was to interpret the narrative themes of the film into a symbolic, graphical piece that would prepare the viewers for the film to follow.

The illustrations were created in Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop, with additional assets being finessed and animated in After Effects.

The project utilised both vector and raster assets in combination to get the best visual result without needing too much processing power to render as I was working with limited gear.

Vectors were used for the main illustrative parts of the work. Which were split into multiple layers so that they could individual animation and effects applied to them.

These vectors were then combined with raster textures to achieve a hand crafted and worn feel to the sequence. These textures were tileable in order to overcome technical limitations.

As there were many layers animating in similar paths, expressions were used to control multiple layers with a single control layer (null object). This made the more complex animations easier to create and refine.

The typeface used for the credits was hand drawn, based on Times, then scanned in and tidied up in Adobe Photoshop.

Thanks to Markus Kellow for his excellent work and patience on the soundtrack.

A very straightforward process and effective. You still have the idea executed in highly stunning quality whilst overcoming the limitations you knew you had for this task.
