Check out Passion Pit’s new clip for “To Kingdom Come” by mixtape club.
It seems like they’re trying to invent colours and shapes… a worthy cause. There are some great shots of the band with animation going on in the background, very cool. I’m not sure if it’s projections of greenscreen but it’s a great effect.
Check it out.

if you pause between 0:57 & 0:58 it looks like the image is distorting around the contours of the building. how’d you project on that angle and at that intensity without overly influencing the band lighting boggles my mind a little bit.
there’s also a cut at 3:25 in which you can see the background images reflecting off the instruments, the funny thing is this doesn’t seem to happen anywhere else. band lighting elsewhere seems uninfluenced by lighting changes behind them.
the scene from 3:55 on and in fact all scenes with arched windows i imagine must have been something like green-screen.
what do you think?
to add to my already lengthy comment i found an error in the masking; projected green-screen 100%. keep an eye on the far left drum between 3:35 and 3:40.
Some serious detective work there Alex.
I’d love to see an interview on how this is done because it’s possibly a combination of a few techniques.
The reflections and distortions are either a sign of projections or good compositing.
There are some pretty cool things you can do with projectors. Horse Bazaar has something like 6 projectors matched up to make a 2 wall screen. I have also seen some impressive stuff from custom programs so you can map multiple projectors to objects.
Maybe only the guys and girls at mixtape club will ever know.
There were no projectors. It’s all green screen, After Effects, and elbow grease.
Here’s some production stills from the shoot:
